i currently have powweb, but they're becoming more and more unreliable. i think its time t'go! the requirements for what i'm looking for: 1) cheap (duh!) $8/month or less. 2) good bandwidth. my site has the potential to do 25gb / month 3) decent storage size - i'm probably at about 3-400 mb 4) webstats, something similar in layout to these5) reliability - up time! not like powweb's! 6) no file limit (not size) - again, not like powweb's!! 7) email accounts - maybe just 3 or 4. nothin major. 8) ftp accounts - again, maybe just like 3 or 4. 9) tech support - just like my pants; doesn't have to be 24/7, but i'd like it to be reliable 10) decent user CP 11) mysql support -- for ubb.threads! 12) cname support (something.URL.com) - maybe like 3 or 4. there, hows that?

Well - first thing - you get what you pay for. That's a pretty cheap fee for that much storage and bandwidth. And when you have a hosting provider like that, what it means is that they are making it up in volume. They stack twice as many sites on your server and bank on the law of averages that not everyone will use 25GB of bandwidth and that much storage. Now sometimes they do and you get performance issues, or they place restrictions on things so that it's difficult to maximize your alotment. Generally, a rule of thumb for a decent host, in my opinion would be $20/mo. 200MB and 20GB. Not to say that every cheap provider isn't any good etc... But sometimes you do get what you pay for. Infopop offers web hosting, starting in the twenty-something dollar range. For a lower price alternative (I think starting at $6.95, I'd recommend Jeremy here www.vertexhost.com.Several users here host with him and I'm sure they will speak positive about his service. You won't get quite that much bandwidth/space for that starter package... so you might need to move up the line a bit. Hope that helps.

Oh and alot of hosts will have webstats like that. That's webalizer, which is free stat software and it's preinstalled on any host using CPanel. CPanel is my personal control panel of choice.

I know someone who's with www.ipowerweb.com and is very happy. Not sure if they meet all your criteria though. Bandwidth is certainly generous at 40 GB/mth.

once again, thanks for the help everybody :-D i think i've experienced a lot of the downfalls josh mentioned with places like powweb and, as i'm learning more and more from personal experience and this thread, its probably a good idea if i make a host switch soon! overall, some really good recommendations above. one of my colleagues suggested www.lunarpages.com, which also looks pretty good. so, some things i have to find out now are: 1) does powweb have a cancellation fee? 2) my domain is with dotster.com -- i just change the name server from powweb to new place? 3) should i have my site (not boards) running in both places at the same time, so there's no downtime? like, until it officially moves over, people will still be directed to powweb site (instead of just seeing nothing)?? is that the best way?

Typically the best way.....
- Close your forum - Transfer all files to your new host - Transfer the database - Run the forum at your new host under a temporary URL or IP address (typically given by the new host) - Change the DNS on the domain - After 2 o4 3 days when the domain updates, then you can change back to using your real domain for the forum.

I just switched from powweb to www.tntpowerhost.com . They don't have a cancellation fee, you would just lose what you may have had prepaid. I had Josh do the switch for me, and everything was reasonable. I'd let him do it again if needed, and will be certainly be calling him when 6.5 comes out. Josh has one more happy customer to add to his list.

That's a lot of bandwidth and storage for only $8. Though I would also reccomend Vertexhost . His company hosts four sites of mine, three production and one test site. I'm very happy w/ this host Plus if you do a little detective work in this forum, you can get a 10% off redemption code

I've seen the discount. Just decided to give a member of another board a chance. So far, so good.
